General information
Zithromax belongs to the group of macrolide antibiotics. It interferes with grow of bacteria cell. It is used to treat different kinds of infections such as respiratory infections, skin infections, ear infections, and sexually transmitted diseases. It can be used for treatment of middle ear infection, pneumonia, tonsillitis, and strep throat in children. This medication will not work for viral infections (such as common cold, flu).
Directions
It is recommended to take Zithromax with a full glass of water with or without food. Taking the medication with food may help to avoid stomach upset. Consult your doctor regarding proper dosage for you. The recommended adult dose of azithromycin for treatment of lung and skin infections is two 250 mg tablets taken on the first day, followed by one 250 mg tablet taken at the same time each day for 4 more days.
Precautions
It is not recommended for pregnant and breastfeeding women to use the medicine. Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of: liver disease, kidney disease, a certain muscle disease (myasthenia gravis).
Contraindications
It is contraindicated to take the drug if you have hypersensitivity to it or if you are taking related drugs azithromycin or erythromycin.
Drug interaction
Zithromax can’t be used along with aluminum- or magnesium- based antacids(Mylanta or Maalox). There may be an interaction between azithromycin and any of the following: phenytoin, hexobarbital, ergotamine, triazolam, quinidine, etc.
Missed dose
Take the missed dose as soon as possible. If it is almost time of the next intake just skip it and go back to your schedule.
Overdose
If you think you have overdosed the medicine seek emergency medical immediately. The overdose symptoms are nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach discomfort.
Storage
Store the medicine at room temperature between 59-77 F (15-25 C) away from light and moisture, kids and pets.
