General information
Lamprene is an antileprosy agent that contains Clofazimine in the formula. It works through binding to the guanine bases of bacterial DNA and blocking the template function of the DNA. It improves bacterial phospholipase A2 activity resulting in release and accumulation of lysophospholipids that are toxic and inhibit bacterial proliferation.
Directions
Dosage amount depends on the age and patients’ general conditions. It should be individually administered depending on severeness of the case. Generally the daily dosage for adults and children over 12 years old varies from 50 to 100 milligrams taken once daily. This medicine can be taken in a combination of other medicines aimed to treat leprosy.
Precautions
To avoid a possible negative effect on a fetus or neonate infant, consult your doctor or chemist health care provider in case you are pregnant, plan to be pregnant or breastfeeding a baby. You must also tell your doctor if you have ever suffered from liver dysfunction as clofazimine is able to cause hepatitis and chronic hepatic insufficiency; stomach and intestinal disorders, acute abdominal pain that can be a sign of a serious adverse drug reaction. This medicine impairs your reactions, therefore you must be extremely careful while driving or performing any actions that require high concentration of attention and fast reactions. Follow your doctor’s instructions about the type and amount of liquids, meals, food supplements and other medications you may safely apply simultaneously with this product.
Contraindications
This medication is contraindicated in patients that are hypersensitive to clofazimine.
Possible side effect
An adverse drug reaction involves following side effects: gastrointestinal disorders such as diarrhea, heartburn; nausea; erythroderma, scaly skin, urticaria, itching, acneiform eruptions, phototoxicity; emesis; changes in taste; xerostomia; loss of appetite; thrush. In a few cases mental depression, yellow or red eyes and skin discoloration were reported.
Drug interactions
In case you are not confident whether this medicinal product is compatible with other medicines or supplements, discuss it with your doctor or pharmacist. It is not advisable to combine the usage of this product with other drugs of similar class without your doctor’s permission as it may result in a serious aggravation. Lamprene is known to interact with antacids and laxatives containing magnesium hydroxide; antiepileptic drugs based on phenytoin sodium.
Missed dose
In case you have missed to take a dose of this herbal product, take it as soon as possible. If it is near the time to take a next dose, skip taking the missed dose and maintain your ordinary dosage schedule. Never try to make up the missed dose by taking an extra one.
Overdose
If you suspect overdosing, or suffer from any side effects not listed here, immediately look for medical help and consult your doctor.
Storage
This medication is stored at room temperature away from sources of sunlight, heat and moisture. Do not store this drug in the bathroom. Keep it away from reach of children and pets.
