General information
Ilosone belongs to the group of medicines called macrolide antibiotics. The formula consists of two superpotent ingredients. The first one is Zmax and the second one is Biaxin. This drug is effective in treating different types of infections caused by bacteria. A range of diseases treated by this medicine covers infections of the upper and lower breathing passages such as tonsillitis, pneumonia, Legionnaire’s disease, bronchitis, pertussis, sinusitis, laryngitis, strep throat, listeriosis; sexually transmitted diseases such as nongonococcal urethritis (inflammation of the urethra) and cervicitis (inflammation of the neck of the uterus), syphilis, gonorrhea. Ilosone is also aimed to treat skin infections provoked by bacterium called Staphylococcus aureus that enters the skin through open wounds and provokes septicaemia.
Directions
Follow your doctor’s prescription about the appropriate dosage intake considering your age and conditions. The intake of this medicine is supposed provided your doctor has prescribed it for you. Ilosone should be taken on an empty stomach. It is also possible to take it with meals. This drug is not to be crushed, chewed or broken while you take it. Swallow the pill whole. Pills have a special coating aimed to protect your stomach. The protective coating can be injured if you break the pill. Ilosone is the delayed-release pill that should release medicine slowly after you have swallowed it. If you break the pill it can cause too much of the drug to be released right away, which is not desirable.
Precautions
You should tell your doctor if you have ever suffered from hepatic insufficiency, jaundice, or any type of allergy caused by an adverse drug response. If you take this medicine repeatedly or for a very long time it may provoke a reinfection. To avert a negative affection on your child, you have to immediately notify your doctor if you are pregnant or in a condition of lactating. This drug may bring a potential danger by changing a breast milk composition.
Contraindications
The usage of this drug is prohibited to patients suffering from hypersensitivity to any type of macrolide antibiotics, hepatic failure, fungal diseases, cowpox or chickenpox. Precautions are advised when children take this drug.
Drug interactions
Ilosone must not be taken concurrently with following medicines: terfenadine (Seldane, Seldane-D), astemizole (Hismanal), cisapride (Propulsid), pimozide (Orap). Ilosone may interact with these medicines causing dangerous palpitations .The list of medicines that can interact with Ilosone is not complete. There are a few more drugs that are prone to interact with Ilosone.
Missed dose
In case you have missed to take a dose of this medicine, take it as soon as possible. If you are already supposed to take your next dose, do not take the skipped dose and keep your ordinary dosage schedule. Avoid taking an extra dosage.
Overdose
If you suspect you have used too much of this medicine seek emergency medical attention right away. The symptoms of overdosing may provoke acute hepatic insufficiency in a combination with a hearing loss.
Storage
This medicine is to be stored at room temperature between 59-77 degrees F (15-25 degrees C) away from light and moisture, kids and pets. Avoid using it after the expiry date is over.
