General information

Minocin is a tetracycline antibiotic that fights bacteria in the body. It is most commonly used to treat certain types of skin infections, urinary tract infections, gallbladder infections, and respiratory tract infections such as bronchitis, pneumonia, and sinusitis.

Directions

Take Minocin exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Take this medicine with a full glass of water. Take Minocin on an empty stomach, at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal. The usual recommended adult dose is 100 mg or 200 mg for the first dose, followed by 100 mg every 12 hours.

Precautions

Before using Minocin tell your doctor if you have liver or kidney disease, asthma, sulfite allergy, if you are using a penicillin antibiotics (ampicillin, oxacillin, dicloxacillin). Antibiotic medicines can cause diarrhea, which may be a sign of a new infection. If you have diarrhea that is watery or bloody, stop taking minocycline. This medication may impair your thinking or reactions. Be careful if you drive or do anything that requires you to be alert.

Contraindications

You should not take this medicine if you are allergic to minocycline or to other tetracycline antibiotics, if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Minocin is not recommended for children under 13 years of age.

Drug interactions

Tell your doctor about all other medicines you use, especially: antibiotics, acetaminophen, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (ibuprofen, celecoxib, diclofenac), heart or blood pressure medicine (enalapril, ramipril, lisinopril), methotrexate, isotretinoin, methylergonovine, ergotamine, cholesterol medications (lovastatin, simvastatin, atorvastatin), blood thinner (warfarin).

Missed dose

Take the missed dose as soon as possible. Skip the missed dose if it is time for your next scheduled dose. Don’t take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.

Overdose

If you think you have overdosed the medicine seek emergency medical help at once. The overdose symptoms are diarrhea, nausea, vomiting.

Storage

Store the medicine at room temperature between 68-77 degrees F (20-25 degrees C) away from light and moisture. Keep all drugs away from reach of children and pets. Do not store the drugs in the bathroom. Store it in a tight container.
